There is a long history of Acoustic Emission research at Cardiff University
Pre 1990: Materials and Minerals Division, mainly wire rope applications for mining and shipping applications.
Post 1990: Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Materials Divisions, mainly metallic structures, but recent addition of concrete and composite structures and materials and biomechanics.
Facilities
The School of Engineering has:
- A wide range of static and dynamic testing machines (currently being upgraded by means of a 2.4M SRIF3 grant) and data logging equipment, and a highly qualified and experienced technical workforce.
- Expertise and an international reputation for testing and monitoring structures both commercially and for research dates back for more than twenty years.
- From grant funding the University has acquired AE equipment comparable with that of a commercial company, including a suite of state-of-the-art AE multi-channel data acquisition systems and a large array of sensors for all monitoring conditions.
